About

ETH Zurich - Network City and Landscape, Isfahan University of Technology and University of Tehran, in the  framework of the joint academic initiative, with the task of articulating sustainable solutions for the railway development, the transport reorganization and urban renewal of Isfahan area, organize an international student seminar with the topic: Rail and City Development in Isfahan. In the Workshop 36 students (16 students from ETH Zurich and 20 students from Iranian institutions) and several professors, coaches and experts of the three Universities will participate. The goal, apart from the educational process itself, is the study and the outcome of useful conclusions for the spatial and railway development in Iran with a focus on the agglomeration and city of Isfahan.

Besides the participants of the Workshop, the active participation of all relevant stakeholders and the public is crucial, since the first are responsible in decision-making, that has an impact on the life of the latter. Thus, a collaborative discussion towards public consensus is purposeful, not only producing agreements and plans, but also enacting experimentation, learning and building shared meaning among all affected parties, avoiding later misconceptions and conflicts.


Expecting Results

 After an intensive 1-week seminar, the following outcomes are to achieve:

  • A comprehensive overview of the status quo
  • Classifying different aspects of railway station development and analysis of possible impacts of such aspects on the spatial development
  • Identifying the important aspects for the axis development
  • Identifying bottlenecks and hot-spots in transportation corridor
  • Providing planning analysis at various levels
  • Creating tools for integrating and interconnecting the different horizontal and vertical levels
  • Recommending the instruments for integrated spatial and transport development, and highlight mechanisms for effective institutional collaboration
  • Recommendations to solve the area of conflicts between the actors and various interests
  • A systematic evaluation of the circumstances of the proposals
  • Feasibility and implementation procedures (time-cost-organization)
  • Preparation and presentation of understandable and well-argued measures to communicate with local people
